When a toothache shouldn’t wait

By Dr. Shruti Agarwal · Principal dentist, Dentisky · 3 min read

When a tooth hurts, the useful question is not “Can I name the problem?” It is “What should I do next?” Describe what you feel and let a dental professional assess the cause. A website or a photograph cannot reliably make that assessment.

Some symptoms need prompt attention

Severe tooth or gum pain, facial or jaw swelling, a bad taste, fever or difficulty opening your mouth may occur with a dental abscess. Contact a dentist urgently if you suspect an abscess. It needs dental treatment and will not go away on its own.

Know when to go beyond a dental booking

Difficulty breathing, speaking or swallowing, major swelling in the mouth, or a swollen or painful eye or vision changes need emergency medical assessment. Do not wait for an appointment form or WhatsApp reply. Go to an emergency department. In India, call 112 if you need emergency assistance.

Make the call useful

Tell the clinic when symptoms began, where they are, whether swelling is changing and whether you have fever. Mention any treatment you have recently had. You do not have to know the diagnosis to ask for help.

A small note for your appointment

If your symptoms worsen while waiting, seek further advice rather than relying on an earlier plan. Appointment requests on this website are not an emergency service.

Describe the change, not a diagnosis

When you contact a clinic, a short, clear description is more useful than a label you found online. Start with the location, when it began and what has changed. If there are several symptoms, mention all of them. Tell the person answering the call if you are looking for help today, and listen to their instructions about where and when to be seen.

Keep the description factual: “This began yesterday and the swelling is larger today” is clearer than “I think it is probably nothing.” Equally, you do not need to decide that a particular treatment is required before a dentist has examined you.

Use the right route to get help

The appointment form is useful for planning ordinary visits, but it is not continuously monitored emergency care. If the situation is urgent, make a phone call and explain that. If you cannot reach the clinic, seek another available dental service rather than assuming a sent message has arranged treatment.

For the emergency symptoms described above, go directly to emergency medical care. You do not need to finish the online self-check first. Keep any notes about the timing of your symptoms available, but never delay getting help in order to make a perfect record.

General educational information, not a diagnosis or a personal treatment plan. Your dentist can advise after assessing your individual needs.
